Pigment, Melasma

Melasma, chloasma or “the mask of pregnancy” is due to excessive melanin (pigment) production in the skin and is seen in sun-exposed areas. Excess hormones like those in pregnancy, birth control pills, hormone-replacement, “natural hormone supplements,” and possibly even the Mirena® * IUD, when combined with sun and heat exposure are thought to be the cause. Treatment for melasma centers around removing any source of exogenous hormone, sun & heat avoidance, and the use of pigment-lightening products and procedures.
